CONTROL OF PHOSPHATE IN AGRICULTURAL SETTINGS: The MDR Project

The project is funded by a grant from the PADEP Growing Greener program to Trout Unlimited.  The project is a continuation of earlier project, funded by NRCS through the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, that established that Mine Drainage Residuals (MDR) can lessen the soluble phosphorous component of dairy and swine manure.  The finding could be the basis of a Best Management Practice (BMP) that would provide farmers with a method for lessening the environmental mobility of P in land-applied manure and thus lessen runoff of P to receiving streams and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay.

The project was completed in 2019. A paper summarizing the project was published in the Journal of Environmental Quality and is available here.
